ACT Presents: The Thin Place by Lucas Hnath

Produced in special arrangement with Concord Theatricals

Co-Directed by Jason Justice & Treyton Blackburn

Tickets are $12.00

Performances will be held in the Oddfellow Lodge Meeting Room (above the Mountain Muse in Downtown Prestonsburg) on Oct. 14-15 and Oct. 28-29.

Performances will be held in the Breaks Interstate Park Rhododendron Convention Center on Oct. 21-22 and Oct. 30-31.

The Thin Place is the story of two women, Hilda and Linda. Linda communicates, professionally, with the dead, who are still here, just in a different part of here, in the "thin place." She can make those who believe hear them, offering them peace and closure, and meaning. Originally from rural England, she’s reestablished herself in the U.S.—the birthplace of spiritualism—where she has continued to build a career out of her gift. Hilda, a keen listener, and observer who’s grappling with loss takes a great interest in Linda’s abilities. She befriends the veteran medium, seeking answers that lie across the fragile boundary between our world and the other one.

Hnath’s play bristles with the disquieting suggestion, probing the most timeless questions about reality, the impressionability of the mind, and the omnipresence of death as we float through life. Ever gifted at taking the pulse of the world around him, Hnath matches these universals with a timely resonance, distilling collective feelings of national chaos—and our political and spiritual vulnerabilities therein—to a chillingly personal scale.

With acuity and relentless curiosity, Lucas Hnath’s play transforms the theater into an intimate séance, crafting an unnerving testament to the power of the mind.

The lovable Clampett family rides onto ACT stage for an evening of hillbilly hilarity. Starting in the Clampett's mountain cabin, the play follows them through the discovery of oil, their improbably invasion of hi-falutin' Beverly Hills society and the absurd adventures and ridiculous romances they encounter there. They and the people they meet in "Californy" provide an evening of fun for the whole family!

n the 1890’s, at the small house on top of a hill in Nagasaki, Japan, Pinkerton, an officer in the American Navy, has arranged to take a Japanese wife. Sharpless, the American consul, advises Pinkerton that his actions are hasty, but Pinkerton ignores this advice. Pinkerton marries a beautiful geisha named Cio-Cio-San, known as Madam Butterfly.

After their wedding, Pinkerton returns to America. Three years pass but Cio-Cio-San still believes that he will return to her. One day, Sharpless visits her with a letter from Pinkerton, but cannot bring himself to reveal the contents of the letter as Cio-Cio-San looks so happy with their son, of whom Pinkerton knows nothing. After Sharpless leaves, Cio-Cio-San confirms that an American battleship to which Pinkerton is assigned, has entered the port at Nagasaki.

Sharpless appears with Pinkerton and Kate, his new American wife. Pinkerton, overcome with guilt, flees the house, leaving Cio-Cio-San to come in and see only Kate. Realizing the bitter truth, Cio-Cio-San agrees to give her son up, but insists that Pinkerton must return for him. Cio-Cio-San, realizing the shame this situation has brought, returns to her culture's code of honor as Pinkerton runs in, calling out her name.

THE CHRISTIANS, written by Lucas Hnath, is coming to Artists Collaborative Theatre, Inc. August 23rd-September 2nd & September 13th-23rd!

Twenty years ago, Pastor Paul’s church was nothing more than a modest storefront. Now he presides over a congregation of thousands, with classrooms for Sunday School, a coffee shop in the lobby and a baptistery as big as a swimming pool. Today should be a day of celebration, but Paul is about to preach a sermon that will shake the very foundations of his church’s belief. Backed by a live choir, The Christians is both epic and unexpectedly intimate—an unflinching look at faith in America, its power to unite or divide, and the trouble with changing your mind.

Shows occur every Thursday, Friday, Saturday at 7:30 pm and on Sundays at 3 pm. Tickets are $12 and can be reserved with us through Facebook.
